The Communications Department is excited to introduce a new series: Under the Surface. In this series, I, Ally DeVore, will be heading out into the field to highlight the incredible workers I’ve met and to share my experiences at various locations. As someone new to this industry, it’s been exciting getting to learn about the field while meeting the dedicated people who make up Rogers Group.

My first stop for this series was Whites Creek Quarry in Nashville, TN. It was my first time really out in the field, and I was eager to get started. I was joined by Thomas Harper, the Assistant Plant Manager, who kindly gave me a tour.

The first person I met was James Williams, a Mining Blaster. James transitioned to Rogers Group from a background in corrections. He was intrigued by the quarries he used to pass by when living in his hometown, and after moving near our Gallatin location, he decided to apply. When I asked him what he enjoyed most about working at Rogers Group, he said, “It’s a good work environment. The managers are easy to get along with, and it’s a good job.”

Next, we headed to a lookout point to take a few pictures, marking my first time seeing a pit. Naturally, I had to ask why the water was so blue—and whether it was safe to swim in!

Afterward, we went into the pit, where I met Tony Ricketts, a Plant Operator. Tony invited me into his workspace, and I learned that he’s been with Rogers Group for 26 years! He started out as a welder in maintenance and eventually became a Plant Operator as he advanced in his career. When I asked him what he enjoyed most about working at Rogers Group, he said, “A lot of people don’t want to get up and go to work, but I’ve never really felt that way. I’ve always enjoyed coming to work.” He also shared that he appreciates the company’s focus on safety, good pay, and health insurance, and that he’s never considered leaving since the day he started.

Did you know? Quarry water appears blue due to minerals and light refraction. Though it may look inviting, swimming is not allowed.

Next, I met Tyler Camp, a man of many roles. He works as a grounds man, assists with maintenance, and is exploring a lead position. Tyler plays a big part in keeping the plant running and is always ready if something needs fixing. He’s been with us since October 14, 2023. Before RGI, he worked with our competitor, Vulcan. When I asked what made him take the leap to join RGI, he said, “People talk—I heard there were better opportunities and a better work environment.” So, he decided to branch out and give us a try. Tyler says RGI has lived up to its reputation, which is why he’s stayed with us. “You can’t ask for anything better,” he added. Plus, he enjoys crushing rock, after all!

Lastly, I had the chance to meet Nick Thomason, the Night Shift Lead Man. Nick plays a big role in keeping the plant running, ensuring everything is set up for the day shift team to keep things

moving smoothly. He’s been with RGI since May 16, 2022. When I mentioned that everyone seems to remember their start date, he smiled and said, “You remember something that you enjoy.” Nick’s been pouring concrete for 16 years, and he came to RGI when he realized he needed something better. He found us on Indeed, and from his very first interview, he looked around and knew this was the place for him. Nick wanted a career, not just a job, and he was excited to dive into the hands-on, physical work because that’s his style. He’s stayed with RGI because of the great people, job stability, and, of course, the pay and benefits. Beyond his role here, he also partners with a food truck running in downtown Nashville and manages his own pressure washing business on the side. Nick loves staying busy and truly enjoys his work with us. His only regret? Not finding RGI 20 years ago. He says he’s very thankful and blessed for all the opportunities he’s had here.

It was such a pleasure to go out in the field and learn about some of the incredible people who make up Rogers Group. It’s easy to see that the heart of the company lies within its people. I’m excited to continue this series, explore different locations, and meet even more great individuals. Stay tuned for the next stop, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you know someone who deserves a highlight!
